Stojo is one of the most popular brands of reusable mugs out there and it is no surprise why. Not only is it designed for convenience to fit into the lifestyle on the go, they also have super slick branding and colours.
I first got introduced to Stojo a while back and I bring my white Stojo wherever I go. Sadly I left it on a beach in Australia some time ago, but I know I am going to get a new one at some point, especially when I start going around more when things open up. Truly there are many reasons to love the cup. I have broken it down for you below. There is a video version too 🙂
About Stojo
Stojo is founded by Jurrien Swarts, Alex Abrams and Ben Melinger. After working 15 years in finance, Jurrien and Alex decided to come up with a product idea. The design of the Stojo cup was initially inspired by those collapsible metal camping cups. These cups don’t always work that well though, so they thought they could improve on it.
The two had little design knowledge though, but luckily they ran into Ben, their third co-founder. Ben has taught himself how to design and do CAD after leaving a job in consulting, and he said he would love to help them with the cup design. It took them 2 years from there to come up with a working prototype, and in 2014, they launched a kickstarter.
The kickstarter did incredibly well, raising $128,000 in total ($118,000 more than their goal!). The inspiration of the cup also comes from their personal experience as busy people. Jurrien recounts how despite feeling bad about the amount of disposable coffee cups he went through back in his corporate job, he didn’t carry a reusable coffee mug around because he felt like it was super bulky. Stojo solves this problem as you can just collapse the cup into a disc after you are done with it.
Stojo is also part of the 1% for the Planet movement started by Patagonia founder Yvon Chinoard. Every year they commit 1% of their annual revenue to environmentally focused nonprofits and currently they are partnering up with Lonely Whale, which is a nonprofit that makes an impact through education and super cool awareness raising campaigns, they are actually behind the whole plastic straw ban movement that started in 2017. The reason why Stojo chose this charity partner is because it is part of their commitment to educate people on the impact of trash and end disposable culture.
Sizes
The sizes they have are 8oz, 12oz, 16oz, 24oz and the size I got is 16oz, which is a Starbucks grande.
The Look
In general I really love the design and look of the stojo. It’s very mellow and pleasant like a Norah jones song. Their whole colour range is also very lovely.
Personally I do think choosing a lighter colour is better so you could see the stains. It does stain when you put darker liquids in it, aka coffee, but they do have instructions on how to clean stains which I will get into in just a bit.

Material
So, the material. According to the info on Stojo’s website, the cup’s body is made of LFGB certified platinum food grade silicone, and their lid and cup sleeve is made of FDA grade polypropylene, or #5 recyclable plastic. LFGB is the German food safety standard, which has safer and higher standards than the US’ FDA standards. Stojo is free of: BPA, BPS, cadmium, mercury, lead, and all California Prop 65 harmful substances.
See I think you can find a bunch of similarly designed cups on the internet which might be cheaper, but when you’re buying from a brand, their name is on the line so you can be sure that it is made from safe materials and if it’s not, you can go hold them accountable.
Lots of good and bad things you can say about the internet and social media but I think on the good side, this helps us keep brands accountable for their actions and promises. Before, all you can do is trust a brand’s marketing and suffer silently when their product or services don’t live up to what they say in their ads.

The Drinking Experience
It’s a decent drinking experience from the lid. Nothing to complain about here.

Leak Test
Stojo passes the leak test with flying colours. I have had the cup in my bag filled with liquid, with just a little bit when it’s collapsed, and it has never failed on me. Just make sure you screw on the lid right before you chuck the cup in your bag.

Warmth Retention Test
Here is where it fails a little. Stojo’s material is not designed to keep your drink warm. That is not it’s selling point. It has the warmth retention ability similar to that of a disposable paper cup. So keep this in mind if this is something important to you!

Weight
208g
It’s lighter than the Frank Green 10 oz (which I have reviewed as well). So this Stojo holds more but weighs less than my frank green. That’s pretty good.
Weight is an important consideration factor for me in this Stojo review because usually, there is a lot in my bag already – laptop, gym clothes etc. So any extra weight I add matters to me.

The Cleaning Test
Cleaning is really easy. If you know how to use a sponge you could clean this cup with no issues. There are no hard cracks to get into, no small parts that might get lost. Easy peasy.
For removing stubborn stains, Stojo recommends soaking your cup in a mix of water and 3% hydrogen peroxide, and letting it sit for 24-48 hours.
Other than that I usually use the following method with baking soda to give my silicone products a deep clean

Stojo Review Overall: 4.5/5
And that’s all for my Stojo review. See the product for yourself here. Hope you like it as much as I do. The Stojo is definitely a reusable coffee cup Olympian in my book!
