I am always on the lookout for good design, but I think I haven’t been so excited about a product for a while. It is just so clever. While many great products I see are iterations or hybrids of existing designs, the Cadence capsule is one of those designs that just makes you think – why didn’t I come up with that?! Read more in my review below.
In a nutshell, the Cadence capsule is a travel-size capsule that is leak-proof, super tough, with a lid that magnetises to the capsule’s side when you open it up. It is one of those products that you can’t help demo-ing to friends when they ask “what is that?”. But it’s not just a gimmicky toy, you would actually regularly use it.

I love their OG Terracotta colour to begin with, but imagine my delight when I heard they were launching new colours! Exclamation mark!
Guys, meet Lavender and Sand.
Aren’t they pretty?
Feel free to watch the video I took where I unboxed and reviewed the capsules when they first launched. (Their first colour was Terracotta!)
The brilliance of these minimalistic capsules will especially resonate with anyone who has brought along a collection of single-use bottles for lotions and shampoos onto trips. They are usually all of different shapes and sizes, and worst of all, sometimes they leak. Ew. Cadence is your answer to organising and beautifying your mini beauty and necessities entourage. I mostly use my capsules for bringing along lotion or sunscreen every day.
What you could put in Cadence capsules
Basically, you could put anything that fits in the capsule, that you wish to bring along with you. Here are some things I have used them for, or have heard other people use them for.
- Hand Lotion
- Sunscreen (I brought SPF in my Cadence capsule during my first camping trip ever!)
- Shampoo
- Lip balm
- Pills
- Jewelry
- Condiments (for those who like to bring along gourmet ketchup. Anyone?)
Material
Cadence capsules are made with 50% recycled material. Their partner, Envision Plastics, collects plastic from beaches around the world by employing local communities.
Their current blend is 20% recycled ocean-bound plastic and 30% reused scrap plastic. They acknowledge they are not at 100% yet – but, they’ve tried! They have talked to everyone from the helmet engineers at the NFL to internationally renowned plastic experts and learned that technology is not where they need it to be to create a product that is reusable, durable, and chemically resistant. But to make sure they are part of the long term solution, they have built out a team of engineers, manufacturers and advisors and together they are working to get there as quickly as possible. Love that!
Function
Let’s look at a few key features of these capsules
Waterproof
Cadence capsules are waterproof so not only does this mean your lotions can’t come out, water also can’t get in so your pills would be safe. Skip to 2:11 of my video above to see for yourself 🙂
You won’t drop your lid
Your capsule lid magnetizes to the side of your capsule when you have it open – so no fear of losing the lid!
Customizable
You could customize the word or icon on top of your lid – such as “conditioner”, “cleanser”, a sun icon (for sunscreen, or type your own.
Tough
These capsules are like mini bomb chambers for your beauty products. They could even sustain the weight of me standing on them! (Video above at 2:45)
No right angles
A small detail, but it’s hard to verbalise how joyful it is to not feel like you need to put effort into digging out lotion with your nails from the right angle bottom of a capsule. This is what I call considerate design!
Build your honeycomb
Individual capsules magnetically snap together, creating a buildable “honeycomb” system that is tidy AND cute!
Sustainability
As you learned from the material part, Cadence capsules are made with 50% recycled material. Sustainability, and caring for the planet, accounts for a huge part why Cadence came about. Steph Hon, the founder of Cadence, created the capsules because she needed the capsules on her gym to work routines, date night and weekend adventures. She quickly also considered the environmental aspect.
When we talk about plastic pollution, we rarely talk about the impact from the portable personal care industry. Roughly 9 billion single-use plastic travel bottles and 6 billion silicone travel bottles will end up on beaches and in landfills in our lifetime – and that’s in addition to what’s there now.
Cadence is her solution to lowering our footprint on the planet while supporting each individual user’s lifestyle with great design. Cadence also didn’t happen overnight – it was born out of a 3 year development process. I think you could easily tell that from the well-thought-out details of the product’s design!
